An Interview with Artist Whitney Gould

Every month during the First Friday Art Walk in Denver’s Art District on Santa Fe we bring in an artist or maker for a pop-up! This month we’re bringing in artist Whitney Gould. Our store owner Nadia has been friends with Whitney for over a decade, and we’re excited to have him and his artwork in our shop. Ahead of his pop-up with us, we asked him some questions about himself, his art, and sustainability. Enjoy!

When did you start making and selling art?
I started making art and selling it when I was a high school student. That art was music. I made it and sold it at shows and on the internet. I had some bands. I am a content designer by trade. I have always drawn and doodled and painted. Recently I was motivated to buy some art supplies when I was laid off from a self driving truck company. Painting with acrylics gives me a fun method of self exploration that I can do with no real rules or guidelines.

What inspires your work?
My work is inspired by meditation and music and the shapes and colors I see. I like shapes and patterns and using symbols.

What does sustainability mean to you and how does your art reflect that belief?
Sustainability is how we save ourselves and keep our planet liveable. There is so much to reuse. It is important. Reuse things when you can. I like to reuse ideas I hear and see.

What is your goal as an artist?
My goal as an artist is to make something that looks machine made but holds the pain and depth of being a walking being with consciousness.

If you were an animal/breakfast cereal/ice cream flavor/style of architecture what would you be?
Animal - small dog. I love small dogs. I have 2. Steven and Betty.

Breakfast cereal - chex mix - not a cereal person, but i do like this snack that has cereal in it.

Ice cream flavor - chocolate peanut butter - it my fav

Architecture - brutalism, utility, clean lines.

Music - late 70s, early 80s disco crossovers by pop artists.

What’s next for you? Are there any projects or goals you are currently working toward that you'd like to share about?
I am going to continue expressing what I see when I close my eyes. My goal is to be able to make those visions real and true.

Are there any artistic mediums you’d like to explore that you haven’t yet?
I would like to make a chair that I like to sit on. Maybe a pot for a nice plant.
